Republic of Sierra Leone (map), informally Salone. The capital and largest city is *Freetown. The potential for tourism is vast, but largely unrealised. Sierra Leone is rich in natural resources. It has some of the best beaches in the world, a rich heritage, and some stunning scenery, but its greatest asset is its welcoming.
The rainy season from May to November, and a dry season from December to May.
The main attractions for tourist in Sierra Leone are the beaches, nature reserves, mountains and the islands (*Banana Island, map and Turtle Islands, map). Bonthe Town (map), on Sherbro Island, is a former British Colonial Town, with several beautiful stone churches, and a rich culture.

Despite the horrific violence of the 1990s—or actually, because of it—Sierra Leone is a very safe country to visit. While petty pick-pocketing, bag-snatching, and other non-violent crimes are a problem in parts of Freetown.
