#1 Project snapshots

Skift recently conducted a study on behalf of Amadeus for Startups on the State of Travel Startups which documents the challenges and opportunities facing the travel startup ecosystem. > STATE OF TRAVEL STARTUPS SURVEY

According to the Skift survey, one common challenge many travel startups face, regarding their business model, is customer acquisition costs. As some respondents explained, travel startuppers have to balance between pros and cons like a “higher lifetime value per user against acquisition costs per user.”

WE HAVE NOT ONLY SOLVED THIS PROBLEM, BUT WE KNOW HOW TO EARN ON IT.

BACKGROUND

We started to create a travel guide for tourists in 2014.

In the process, we faced a big problem in the international travel market.

Since 2019, we have focused on international tourism.

NOW

Basic catalog in Russian in progress. Translations into English started in 2021.

The process of collecting and organizing information for the catalog cannot be automated.

#2 Problem

IN FACT, NOBODY PROVIDES GLOBAL INFORMATION SUPPORT FOR INTERNATIONAL TOURISTS AND AND ONLINE TRAVEL COMPANIES

FACT #1

100% of international tourists search for information using search engines. There is no single information service.

FACT #2

None of the world’s travel companies provide tourists with global information support.

FACT #3

Furthermore, counter-intuitively, travel sites don’t make it easy to plan a trip. Most travel websites “are optimized for conversion, not for planning”. [askwonder.com]

#4 Underlying magic

THE BASIC IDEA. We want to get 1.5 billion international tourists instead of 1.5 billion dollars. Because 1.5 billion international tourists spend at least $ 1.7 trillion
#1 MANUAL ASSEMBLY OF THE DIRECTORY

Two years ago, no one believed that such a catalog could be created manually. But we did it.

#1 FIRST MOVER ADVANTAGE / FMA

We are confident that such a service would have been created long ago if its creation could be automated.

#5 International tourism market data

2018 – 9th consecutive year of sustained growth. Tourism is the world’s third largest export category after chemicals and fuels, and ahead of automotive products and food. Tourism generates $5 billion a day in exports.

IMPORTANT FACTS

The top 10 countries receive 40% of worldwide arrivals.

The top 10 countries tourism earners account for almost 50% of total tourism receipts.

#6 The way to the market

An information catalog allows us to attract an audience without advertising costs. We are like Google, only we have our own highly specialized information directory for international tourists.

SEARCH ENGINES

100% of international tourists search for information using search engines. We have put a lot of effort into search engine optimisation (SEO) and achieved impressive results.

Every time a person searches for tourist information, he comes to our site. In the end, he will immediately start coming to our service, bypassing Google.

+ SOCIAL NETWORKING SERVICE

76% of travelers use social media while traveling. While researching online, leisure travelers turn to social platforms not only for vacation inspiration, but also to share their own travel experiences with friends and family.

+ We have an original solution for social media promotion and collaboration with opinion leaders in the tourism industry.

Research shows that 94% of searchers skip right past the paid ads on top and directly to the organic results below.

iCrossing’s Apostle said 80% to 90% of traffic from search engine results pages have historically been from users clicking on organic results.

“In the end, the searcher is going to engage with the results that most closely match (or appear to match) what they are looking for … regardless of whether it is an ad or an organic listing,” [cnbc.com]

“People hate advertising,” said Joanna Coles, the former chief content officer of Hearst Magazines, during a session at the Advertising Week conference last month in New York.  [nytimes.com]

#7 Competition

Travel technology providers landscape / for business
NOBODY PROVIDES TRAVEL INFORMATION FOR COMPANIES

FOR TOURISTS

Everyone thinks that Google provides information support. In fact, for every 100 searches typed into the internet, 88 flow through Google (sourse). But Google is just a search engine, an aggregator of information. Google can not make the information better than the information on the original sites.

We are not competing with Google. Google does not have its own information directory. Google sends users to third party websites.

We have our own information catalog, users get answers immediately.

FOR TRAVEL COMPANIES

The Google search engine has ceased to be a convenient service provider for online travel companies.

May 14, 2019 Google has taken a huge next step [google.com/travel/], putting all the pieces together, by including flights, hotels, packages, and trip-planning tools on a edicated website and in Google Search and Google Maps. Google’s foothold in travel just got even larger. [skift.com]

Google took in $7.2 billion in revenue from travel advertisers globally in the 12 months that ended September 30, 2019. Some $5.8 billion of that total came from Booking Holdings and Expedia Group. [skift.com]

We provide the most targeted audience, which only can exist. In addition, we are not a competitor to anyone.

NO INFORMATION SUPPORT FOR TOURISTS

It’s okay if you are interested in the opinion of outsiders.

Created in 2000, TripAdvisor built its brand on the trademark “World’s most trusted travel site”. But after countless lawsuits in multiple countries, by 2013 TripAdvisor quietly removed the words “trusted” as well “honest” from all of its website marketing (now it’s just the “World’s largest travel site”).

Website traffic (2020 год): United States – 72.17%
Bounce Rate – 63.60%

NO INFORMATION SUPPORT FOR TOURISTS

Wikipedia is a free, multilingual online encyclopedia. Wikivoyage is a free web-based travel guide for travel destinations and travel topics written by volunteer authors. Wikitravel is a web-based collaborative travel guide based on the wiki model.

The retailing juggernaut in 2015 had added hotel listings to Amazon Local, a daily deals platform, and then launched a dedicated hotel booking platform called Destinations. After expanding Destinations to 35 cities within a matter of months, Amazon unceremoniously shut down the service without warning and later pulled the plug on Amazon Local. The company offered no explanation other than to say it had “learned a lot” from the experience, leaving many industry analysts scratching their heads.

So far, Amazon has only dipped its pinky toe into the travel waters but there’s some evidence – and intense speculation – that something bigger is coming.

Amazon will not provide information support for tourists, in any case.

#9 Finance. How do we make money?

GLOBAL TRAVEL DIRECTORY

The directory is created once. We do not depend on anyone and do not pay anyone from the outside.

Over the past year, we have attracted 34 750 users with the help of 600 catalog pages.

CUSTOMER ACQUISITION COST

*At 20% efficiency – CAC = $3.4

AVERAGE REVENUE PER USER

ARPU in the Online Travel Booking market worldwide is expected to increase to $573,4 in 2023.

REVENUE FROM TOURISTS

Hotels. Flights. Insurance. Tickets for attractions and events.

Initially, these offers are a bonus for the convenience of users.

+ API SERVICE

We provide a ready-made solution for informational support of users / Online travel companies.

We do not know the value of the sale. This information is usually provided by Wikipedia free of charge. For example, for Instagram and Facebook. But Wikipedia provides general information that is practically not applicable.

+ VOLUME OF ADVERTISING COSTS

Expedia Group, Booking Holdings spent more than $11 B on marketing (mostly to Google).

In “brand marketing,” Booking Holdings paid out $548 M.

The travel industry in the United States spent $5.5 B on digital advertising.

Total government spending on tourism is expected to top $413 B. (2016)

#10 Investment and use of funds

We have tried to automate the process of creating an information catalog, but this is not possible. We consulted with developers, including Eugene Hurynovich, founder of the Parsers startup.

This is why we spend so much effort manually creating a catalog. The good news is that this job only needs to be done once. We are confident that such a service would have been created long ago if its creation could be automated.

OUR SERVICE IS ALREADY RUNNING

www.wantsee.world  Now about 1200 descriptions are ready (RUS / ENG).

The site is under construction, the design has not been completed, the transfer of the Russian version to the subdomain continues. We are now launching the English version.

There shouldn’t be any visitors, but they are, about 3000 visitors a month.

As an example. One page about New York City contains about a hundred links in the description. These are links to official sites of attractions, museums, galleries, etc. Plus links to public transport sites and more.

New York City > 161 clicks / 578K impressions

  • How much did it cost us? ~ $22
  • How much would it cost if it was through advertising?
  • $246 for search / $11,560 for display (*CPM paid of $19.89)

Hunza Valley Pakistan / 254 clicks / 8.083 impressions

  • How much did it cost us? ~ $6
  • How much would it cost if it was through advertising?
  • $388 for search / $160 for display (*CPM paid of $19.89)

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE?

  • Requires 5300 descriptions.

  • Translation of the information catalog into English.

All money will be spent exclusively on creating information pages. We expect to complete everything planned in 18 months.

We will increase our audience reach in English. We will increase the number of search queries that will bring tourists to our website. In two years, the website will have 500,000 monthly visitors. This can really be done.

NEED AN ADDITIONAL $ 120,000

WE HAVE ALL OPPORTUNITIES TO BECOME THE # 1 SERVICE FOR INTERNATIONAL TOURISM

People (tourists) are the main asset of the project, initially and forever. The tourism market may change. Business models, processes, laws can change, new booking services appear and disappear. But people will always travel and seek tourist information.
