** Northern Ireland was established in 1921 as a result of the partition of Ireland through the Treaty concluding the Anglo-Irish war. The majority of the island initially formed what was known as Southern Ireland, then became the Irish Free State, and ultimately gained independence as the Republic of Ireland or Eire. However, six of the nine historic counties of Ulster remained part of the United Kingdom as Northern Ireland, while the other three joined the south.
The geographical and cultural term “Ulster” doesn’t directly denote the political entity of Northern Ireland, and the ongoing plate tectonics of this historical division are still in motion.
