Hofbräuhaus am Platzl, Munich.

Tips for your trips. Tourist information. Official websites.

Welcome to the world`s most famous tavern! The Hofbräuhaus is the cradle of Bavarian tavern culture – the origin of tradition, “Gemütlichkeit” and hospitality. The Hofbräuhaus has more than 100 active groups of regulars. The oldest regulars` table has already been held for 70 years.

Hofbräuhaus am Platzl (map) originally built in 1589 by Bavarian Duke Maximilian I as an extension of the Staatliches Hofbräuhaus in München brewery. Munich’s largest tourist attraction after the Oktoberfest, the Hofbräuhaus am Platzl is also frequented by locals, many of whom keep their personal steins stored there.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived around the block from the beer hall in the late eighteenth century. In a poem he wrote, Mozart claimed to have written the opera Idomeneo after several visits to the Hofbräuhaus fortified him for the task. Other famous visitors include Marcel Duchamp, Thomas Wolfe, Louis Armstrong, Mikhail Gorbachev, NASA astronauts, and past American Presidents John F. Kennedy and George H. W. Bush.

The restaurant comprises most of the Hofbräuhaus am Platzl, which also includes a ballroom and outdoor Wirtsgarten. Its menu features such traditional favorites of Bavarian cuisine as Brezn (soft pretzel), Obatzda (cheese dip), Hax’n, and sausages such as Bratwurst and Weisswurst. Brews include Helles and Dunkles served in a Maß, Weißbier, and wine.

*Altstadt (Old City, map). The city centre with a pedestrian zone that is one big shopping street, and the majority of Munich’s most famous travel sights around Marienplatz (map).

*Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt (map). Night-life area immediately south of the centre, home to many cafés, restaurants, bars, clubs and theatres, hotels and hostels, and the focal point of Munich’s gay scene. Here find Munich Central Station, the Oktoberfest grounds and, last but not least, the Deutsches Museum, the world’s biggest museum of science and engineering.
