Finland

Republic of Finland is one of the world’s northernmost countries. Of world capitals, only Reykjavík lies more to the north than Helsinki. Finland has about 168,000 lakes, *Finnish Lakeland is the area with the most lakes in the country.

Rauma (map) — largest wooden old town in the Nordics and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Tampere (map) — an industrial city, home of culture, music, art and museums. Vaasa (map) — a town with strong Swedish influences on the west coast located near the UNESCO world natural site Kvarken Archipelago.

The main international passenger gateway is Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. There are no direct trains between Sweden or Norway and Finland. VR and Russian Railways jointly operate services between Saint Petersburg and Helsinki.
